Acclaimed travel writer Rick Antonson sets his adventurous compass on Mount Ararat, exploring the region's long history, religious mysteries, and complex politics.
Mount Ararat is the most fabled mountain in the world. For millennia, this massif in eastern Turkey has been rumored as the resting place of Noah's Ark following the Great Flood. But it also plays a significant role in the longstanding conflict between Turkey and Armenia.
Author Rick Antonson joined a five-member expedition to the mountain's nearly 17,000-foot summit, trekking alongside a contingent of Armenians, for whom Mount Ararat is the stolen symbol of their country. Antonson weaves vivid historical anecdote with unexpected travel vignettes, whether tracing earlier mountaineering attempts on the peak, recounting the genocide of Armenians and its unresolved debate, or depicting the Kurds' ambitions for their own nation's borders, which some say should include Mount Ararat.
What unfolds in Full Moon Over Noah's Ark is one man's odyssey, a tale told through many stories. Starting with the flooding of the Black Sea in 5600 BCE, through to the Epic of Gilgamesh and the contrasting narratives of the Great Flood known to followers of the Judaic, Christian, and Islamic religions, Full Moon Over Noah's Ark takes listeners along with Antonson through the shadows and broad landscapes of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Armenia, shedding light on a troubled but fascinating area of the world.

Full Moon over Noah's Ark is another fine memoir from Rick Antonson. It's also an adventure story. And a valuable geography lesson. Antonson, a travel writer by profession, has taken to crafting adventures for himself beyond the confines of five-star hotels and expense accounts. In Full Moon he determines to "summit" the fabled Mt. Ararat in Eastern Turkey. It's fabled for being the alleged site of Noah's ark, for being treacherously difficult to climb, and for being at the center of a territorial dispute between Turkey and Armenia. Antonson has a companionable way of introducing us to the rigors of mountain climbing, the pleasures of new friends, and the tragedies of countries in centuries-old conflict. He seems to have a knack for making friends everywhere he goes, whether it's a cab driver smuggling contraband or a grandfather hitching a ride for the heck of it. This book gave me a new perspective on the countries of the Middle East and their amazing people.Product details

Full Moon over Noah Ark An Odyssey to Mount Ararat and Beyond (Audible Audio Edition) Rick Antonson James Conlan Audible Studios Books Reviews
It was a different style of writing . I stayed up all night reading it to the finish
Take journey to the middle east. Always wanted to and now feel like I have. The mystical story of Noah's ark will be around forever. Maybe this will help you confirm what you think you know.
A facinating and enjoyable read that tells an extraordinary tale of a childhood dream that many years later became a reality. But for me it also showed that we can all be real adventurers. Highly recommended
I loved this book! I was hesitant about purchasing it because of the religious content Noah's Ark would infer, but it was an excellent documentation of the author's journey to Mt. Ararat and the lands that surround. The story was well written, interesting, educational, and captivating. Rick Antonson brings you with him to Turkey, the summit of Ararat, Iraq, Iran, and Armenia to meet with the local people who share their families, friends, homes, and countries with him.
This is a really good book. I didn't have high expectations but was drawn into the narrative and really found it charming, engaging and fun. The author doesn't dwell too much on the Noah piece like many books on this topic do. Instead, you get a balance of culture, history, current societal issues in that part of the world, and, of course, enough Noah, Gilgamesh, and a variety of folk lore items to keep everyone happy! The book moves quickly and provides the right amount of detail and action. The characters are lively. The challenges of travel in the Turkey/Armenia/Iraq/Kurd area are most interesting. Thanks for writing a great book!
Good book, although I found some of the author's attitudes toward risk to be somewhat flippant. However, it's not just an excellent travelogue of places seen and people met, but is combined with enough history to give the reader some context for the writing. I especially enjoyed the beginning, in which the author recounts the beginning of his fascination with Mount Ararat. Having done a bit of study on Armenia and its issues, I didn't find anything new in the book, but quite enjoyed it.
Mr. Antonson is a masterful author and traveler. I thought this book was so unique in its approach to the search for Noah's Ark and the story that has been handed down for ages in different cultures. There are so many different activities in which he gets involved which gives the reader a good history lesson over the land that inhabits Mt. Ararat. The author knows no strangers as he travels along and gives the reader a good example how to experience different cultures and he receives such a trusting relationship and bond with those he becomes friendly. After all the years and exploration to find Noah's Ark, it seems the proof still eludes a positive finding and the mystery of The Ark remains a secret known only to God Almighty. I love his style of writing and would love to read more of his very special books.
